VILLUPURAM: The state human rights commission (SHRC), Chennai has directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide compensation to two human rights activists who were tortured and arrested by a sub-inspector of police in 2019.
Member of the commission D Jayachandran passed the order on May 11, directing the state to pay 25,000 each to Prof
Praba Kalvimani alias Kalyani and R Murugappan of Tindivanam. Jayachandran also recommended to the principal secretary to the government, home, prohibition and excise department to initiate disciplinary action against the SI
Vivekanand of Mailam police station in Villupuram district for torturing and arresting the activists.
SHRC took up the case based on complaints from a few activists that Vivekanand booked Kalvimani and Murugappan on May 15, 2019 on charges of instigating S Mohan of Pombur village to assault his wife
Roja. The Mailam police also harassed the two while arresting them when they were waiting outside the government hospital in Kallakurichi after meeting
Mohan Mohan was hospitalized after being allegedly assaulted by the Mailam police on May 14, 2019. After hearing the arguments, the SHRC concluded that there was no necessity to arrest them.
