Medical tourism in India, in mid-2020, was estimated to be worth around USD 9 billion, which makes India stand at Number 10 in the Global Medical Tourism Index. According to the Ministry of Tourism website, foreign tourist arrivals for medical treatment in India in the calendar year ending December 2020 fell by 73 per cent to 1.82 lakh as compared with 6.97 lakh in 2019. As per experts, corporate hospitals would earn 10-15 percent of their total revenue from medical tourism in the pre-Covid period and it fell down to 5-6 percent due to Covid. However, it is soon expected to rise to pre-Covid levels and even more.

Most of the tourists are from Asian or African countries such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, Indonesia and Kenya, among others.

Quality healthcare at affordable prices is one of the key reasons why foreigners choose India as a preferred destination for medical treatment. Other reasons include minimum waiting period, coverage by premium hospitality services, easy air connectivity and more.
