Mysuru: Five organs of a 66-year-old brain-dead woman, donated by her family, were harvested and transplanted. A kidney and heart valve were transplanted to patients in Bengaluru.
The donor has been identified as
Leelavathi. She was brought to
Apollo BGS Hospitals on May 9 due to a stroke attack. The initial CT scan showed a brain stem infarct. She was shifted to
ICU immediately for life-support and intensive care.
“Leelavathi was kept on life support as she was in a critical state. On May 17, her condition worsened, and was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure. Leelavathi was healthy before this incident and further tests confirmed her eligibility for organ donation. Her family was counselled for organ donation as per the defined protocol, and the deceased family came forward to donate her organs,” informed NG Bharateesha Reddy, vice-president and unit head of the hospital.
Leelavathi’s organs including two kidneys, a liver, heart valves, and corneas were harvested and transplanted to needy patients. The liver and left kidney were transplanted in the Apollo BGS Hospital, Mysuru while the right kidney was sent to
Manipal Hospital, Whitefield, and the heart valves were sent to Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bengaluru. Corneas were sent to
KR Hospital in Mysuru, according to a release.
