Kolkata: Scooter with 3 rams into Jadavpur naka, injures constable, sergeant

Sujit Majumdar
KOLKATA: A Kolkata Police constable was severely injured and a sergeant sustained minor injuries while trying to stop three helmetless riders on a scooter at Jadavpur police station crossing early on Friday.
Constable Sujit Majumdar and sergeant Susanta Saha were on night patrol when the incident happened at 1.50am. The riders crashed straight into the naka check point, leaving Majumdar unconscious. He was bleeding from his nose and face. The man driving the scooter was injured and fell unconscious too. While one of the riders fled, the sergeant caught another.

"The riders were coming from the Prince Anwar Shah connector end and were riding at a moderate speed. We gestured at them to stop as they were violating traffic rules. There were three persons on the scooter and none of them was wearing a helmet. But just as they came near us, the rider sped up and hit Majumdar. He fell down and lost consciousness," said Saha.
The riders, too, fell down and the person driving the two-wheeler suffered head injuries and lost consciousness. The other two tried to flee when Saha chased one of them and caught hold of him. He handed him to Jadavpur police before rushing Majumder to MR Bangur Hospital.
At the hospital, both Majumdar and Saha were given first aid but as Majumdar's condition was severe, he was taken to a private hospital in Dhakuria. "Majumdar underwent multiple scans and X-rays as he continued to complain of chest pain. He has broken his nose and has suffered cuts in his mouth and lips. He has broken a tooth. Currently, he has been advised to rest," said Saha.
"It seemed the men hit me intentionally. If they had intentions to flee, they would have swerved left or right or taken another road from the crossing," constable Majumdar told TOI. An FIR has been lodged by Majumdar.
Cops said the errant bike rider, Manoj Ghosh, was still under treatment but the pillion rider has been arrested. The incident has led to discontent among the lower-rung policemen who said mere arrests in individual cases of cop assault were not enough and demanded an all-round tough police stand to instil respect for the uniform.
"Incidents of traffic police personnel being targeted by rogue motorists have increased significantly over the last few years. The seniors need to take a tough stand to prevent such incidents," said a traffic sergeant in south Kolkata.
