Patiala: A day after the
Supreme Court sentenced former Punjab
Congress chief Navjot Singh
Sidhu in a road rage case dating to 1988, several Congress leaders and former legislators, including Navtej Singh Cheema, Hardial Kamboj, Surjit Singh Dhiman, Ashwani Sekhri and others reached the former’s house in Patiala to meet him on Friday.
Sekhri said Sidhu had always stood up for the issues of Punjab. “We all stood by him. I am a Congress worker and working member of the party,” he said.
Cheema tried to be optimistic, saying it was just a year’s imprisonment and it was not like he had died.
He said many politicians, including Parkash Sing Badal, had faced imprisonment. He went on to take a dig at former minister
Bikram Singh Majithia, who is imprisoned in Patiala jail in a drugs case, saying that it was not like Sidhu had gone to jail in a drugs case.
Former Rajpura MLA Kamboj said SC’s decision would have to be respected and even Sidhu had announced to respect the apex court’s orders. Former AAP leader and former Patiala MP Dr Dharamvira Gandhi also visited Sidhu’s house. Gandhi, in the recent assembly elections, openly supported some selected Congress leaders and had also visited Sidhu’s constituency to extend his support.
