Govt-IITG MoU to set up healthcare institute

Guwahati: The Assam government and IIT-Guwahati on Friday signed an MoU to set up a state-of-the-art healthcare institute that will leverage advanced technologies to transform medical science.
The pact, a first-of-its-kind for the establishment of such a research institution, Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHI), was signed at the IIT-G campus at Amingaon in Kamrup district in the presence of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Pradhan complimented the Assam government and IIT-G on this “landmark day for public policy and good governance” on Twitter, terming the signing of the MoU as a historic occasion.
Under the partnership, a research institute and post-graduate medical college, offering degrees, and a 350-bed multi-specialty hospital will be set up in the existing IIT-Guwahati campus with an outlay of Rs 546 crore.
Elaborating on the upcoming hospital, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that this initiative would provide a platform for cutting-edge research in medical science through use of latest technologies and scientific innovations. “We shall be supporting IIT-Guwahati with a financial grant of Rs 546 crores and would also extend other support for a period of seven years in the first phase. This is for the first time that a state government has come forward to support a centrally funded technical institute in medical research and innovation,” the Sarma said. Sarma added that the AAHI will mark a new paradigm in interdisciplinary medical research and innovations, which will enhance India's medical tech industry in the coming years.
