NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has granted bail to a Delhi University professor who was arrested over a social media post on Gyanvapi mosque. The professor can walk out on bail after furnishing bond of Rs 50,000 and surety on like amount. Delhi Police arrested Ratan Lal, a teacher of history at Hindu College, in connection with a social media post earlier on Friday.
Police received a complaint on Tuesday night alleging that the associate professor had made a deliberate and malicious post on FB to outrage religious feelings. The complainant claimed that the teacher had written offensive comments on a shivling, which claimed to have been found during the Gyanvapi Masjid survey in Varanasi. A case was lodged at the cyber police station of the north district under Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of Indian Penal Code. Following his arrest, AISA workers had started a protest. (With inputs from agencies) Watch Controversial remarks on shivling: DU Professor Ratan Lal granted bail by Delhi court
