MUMBAI: An autorickshaw driver got thrown out of his vehicle and decapitated by a 'speeding truck' taking a sharp turn on the U-bridge near
Bandra Reclamation towards the sea link on Tuesday night. The impact was so severe that Pappukumar Saav's severed head landed four feet away from his body.
As the
CCTV camera at the spot captured the truck's licence plate, Bandra police arrested the driver, M
Sahu (35), the next day. Police said Sahu was not drunk at the time of the incident which took place around 10.55pm.
"Eyewitnesses said the truck took a sharp turn at high speed on the U bridge and hit the autorickshaw from the right. Saav got thrown out of his vehicle and was run over by the truck. His head got decapitated," said Bandra police senior inspector Rajesh Devere.
A woman passenger in the auto suffered injuries. "Eyewitnesses said that after the accident, she hailed another vehicle and left," said ASI Deepak
Bhosale, who rushed to the spot.
Bhosale said the autorickshaw had climbed on the footpath and was badly damaged. "Saav's severed head was lying four feet away from his body. He was identified from his ID card," Bhosale stated in the FIR.
Lost control at sharp turn: Truck driverM Sahu, driver of the truck that hit an autorickshaw on U bridge near Bandra Reclamation on Tuesday night, killing its driver on the spot, claimed that he lost control of the truck at the sharp turn.
He has been booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 279 (rash driving), 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence), as well as under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The impact of the accident was so severe that auto driver Pappukumar Saav got thrown out of his vehicle and was run over by the truck. His head got decapitated and landed four feet away from his body.
This was the second hit-and-run case on the same night. A 36-year-old man from Rajasthan was killed in Saki Naka after an unidentified vehicle hit him and sped away. The victim, Anup Dollas, had come to Mumbai the same day to visit his cousin in Saki Naka. Soon after leaving his relative's home, Dollas died in the accident.
