Assam continues to battle with floods and landslides triggered by ‘large excess’ pre- monsoon rain that has hit 29 of 33 districts, forcing the authorities to airdrop food and essentials in
Dima Hasao and shut educational institutes in
Cachar — the two worst-hit districts.
On the fifth day, the number of flood and landslide-hit people rose to over seven lakh, while over 58,000 hectares of crop area have been damaged by floodwaters.
So far, nine people have died due to floods and landslides in Assam, while 14,550 stranded people have been evacuated with the help of
SDRF, NDRF and volunteers. According to the
IMD, barring Mizoram, all the northeastern states have received rainfall in ‘large excess’ over normal.
