Thiruvananthapuram: A huge tree (
Cassia Fistula) that uprooted at
Cantonment police quarters in Palayam in the heavy rains that lashed the city on Thursday evening caused heavy damages to two cars, a jeep, shed, garbage treatment plant and an incinerator.
Luckily there were no people in the vicinity during the accident. A person, named
Satheesh Babu, a resident of Valiyavila, who came here in his car to visit someone at the quarters, narrowly escaped the mishap. “The tree fell down while the visitor was parking his car. Hearing a huge noise he ran away from the spot, but his car was completely damaged,” said
Palayam Rajan ward councillor.
Another car and a jeep parked adjacent to it were also damaged completely. Fire and rescue personnel and
KSEB staff reached the spot immediately and removed the tree and restored power supply.
The ward councillor said the requests to fell those trees that are prone to collapse during heavy rains were given two months back to PWD. “But PWD officials were too late to do it. Now we are planning to give a request to the district collector via mayor to cut the trees immediately to avoid further mishaps,” said Rajan.
