MUMBAI: Unidentified men used gas cutters to break open an ATM in Virar and decamped with over Rs 17 lakh early on Wednesday. This is the second time in three months that a kiosk of the same nationalised bank has been targeted.
The SBI ATM located in a residential building, Raja Apartment in Gandhi Chowk, Phoolpada, Virar (east), was found damaged by passers-by in the morning.
The police suspect it to be the handiwork of six to seven men as breaking the cash chest required massive effort and experience. The theft is believed to have taken place around 3.30am.
The polic said the modus operandi was similar to the theft in an SBI ATM in February. Unknown persons had destroyed the ATM at Sativali in Vasai (east) using a gas cutter and decamped with over Rs 20 lakh.
