Covid-19 in India Live Updates: India recorded 2,364 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of Covid-19 cases in the country to 4,31,29,563, according to the data shared by the Health Ministry on Thursday. The active cases declined to 15,419, and the death toll climbed to 5,24,303 with 10 fresh fatalities. The active cases were recorded at 0.04 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.75 per cent, the ministry said. A decrease of 228 cases has been recorded in the active Covid-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

Meanwhile, North Korea on Thursday reported 262,270 more cases of people with suspected symptoms of COVID-19 as its pandemic caseload neared 2 million — a week after the country acknowledged the outbreak and scrambled to slow the rate of infections despite a lack of health care resources.

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Shanghai reports 82 symptomatic, 637 asymptomatic COVID cases for May 18

The Chinese financial hub of Shanghai reported 637 new local asymptomatic coronavirus cases for May 18, down from 759 a day earlier. Confirmed symptomatic cases fell to 82 from 96 the previous day, the city's government said in a statement. There were zero cases found outside quarantined areas, the fifth consecutive day of no such cases. The city reported one new COVID-19 related death, compared with three a day earlier. (Reuters)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: Shanghai to reopen subways in easing of COVID restriction

The locked-down Chinese metropolis of Shanghai will reopen four of its 20 subway lines Sunday as it slowly eases pandemic restrictions that have kept most residents in their housing complexes for more than six weeks. The city will also restart 273 bus lines connecting major urban centers, airports, train stations and hospitals as it resumes cross-district public transit, Yu Fulin, director of the Shanghai Transport Commission, said at a daily pandemic briefing Thursday. It wasn't immediately clear how frequent the service would be. Bus service resumed on a trial basis within three outlying districts this week, with buses running every 30 to 90 minutes during daylight hours. (AP)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: China reports 1,082 new coronavirus cases on May 18 vs 1,305 day earlier

China reported 1,082 new coronavirus cases on May 18, of which 212 were symptomatic and 870 were asymptomatic, the National Health Commission said on Thursday. That compares with 1,305 new cases a day earlier, consisting of 240 symptomatic and 1,065 asymptomatic infections, which China counts separately. There was one new death, bringing the country's death toll to 5,218. As of May 18, mainland China had confirmed 222,582 cases with symptoms. (Reuters)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: 31 new COVID-19 cases in Thane, no death

With the addition of 31 new COVID-19 cases, the infection count in Maharashtra's Thane district has gone up to 7,09,441, an official said on Thursday. These new cases were reported on Wednesday, he said. With no fresh fatality, the COVID-19 death toll in the district stood at 11,895 and the mortality rate at 1.67 per cent, he added. In neighbouring Palghar district, the COVID-19 infection tally stood at 1,63,612 and the death toll at 3,407, another official said. (PTI)

Coronavirus Live Tracker: North Korea boosts production of drugs, medical supplies to battle COVID

North Korea is ramping up production of drugs and medical supplies including sterilisers and thermometers as it battles an unprecedented coronavirus outbreak, state media KCNA said on Thursday. The isolated country, which has imposed a nationwide lockdown, is also increasing production of traditional Korean medicines used to reduce fever and pain, KCNA said, calling them “effective in prevention and cure of the malicious disease.” A sweeping COVID wave, which North Korea first confirmed last week, has fanned concerns over a lack of medical resources and vaccines, with the U.N. human rights agency warning of “devastating” consequences for its 25 million people. Coronavirus Live Tracker: China relaxes some COVID test rules for U.S., other travellers

China has removed some COVID-19 test requirements for people flying in countries such as the United States and shortened the pre-departure quarantine for some inbound travellers, as it fine-tunes its measures to cope with the Omicron variant.The slight relaxations were made in response to factors including the “characteristics of coronavirus variants”, according to notices from Chinese embassies and consulates that did not provide further details. The active cases comprise 0.04 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.75 per cent, the ministry said. A decrease of 228 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 0.50 per cent and the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 0.55 per cent, according to the ministry. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,25,89,841, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.22 per cent. (PTI)
