COIMBATORE: After failing twice to locate his biological parents in Coimbatore from where he was adopted by a Danish couple in 1979,
Casper Anderson, 46, accidentally found his sister who he never knew existed, thanks to a DNA test that matched with that of his nephew.
"After I came to know that I was adopted, I searched for my biological parents in Coimbatore in 2015, but in vain. With the help of Netherland-based Against Child Trafficking (ACT) and the Centre for Social Education and Development (CSED), I again visited the city in 2019 and met Mary Catherine, who oversaw the now-defunct orphanage Blue Mountain Children's Home from where I was adopted. Still I wasn't lucky," Casper, a graphic designer in
Aalborg, told TOI over the phone.
"I bought a DNA kit from a company called Ancestry and did what was needed," he said. His DNA strands matched with that of
Matt Davis from St George, a city in Utah, US. Casper befriended Matt on Facebook. During a conversation, Casper found out that Matt's mother
Diane Vijaya Call, 48, was also adopted from an orphanage in Coimbatore by a US couple.
Diane told TOI, "My youngest son said he has befriended my brother from India. He told me that he did a DNA test that matched with a guy in Denmark. Back in 2018, I did a DNA test with a different company which is 23andMe.com, but the strands did not match with anybody's." Casper again did a DNA test with a kit from 23andMe.com. To their surprise, strands of Diane and Casper matched, confirming that they were siblings. It was an emotional moment at Las Vegas airport for Casper and Diane when they met in February this year. "Now, it's confirmed that Casper is my brother. I remember my mother leaving me at the orphanage by promising that she would come and get me, but never returned. All I remember is giving my food to a little boy in the orphanage … I assume that was Casper," said Diane, a single mother of five children. Diane was adopted from the orphanage when she was five years old. She said she would love to fly down to India along with Casper to resume their search for their ancestral roots.
Through a speech about her life in ä church, Diane recently met Chitra Graff who was also one of the inmates of the Coimbatore-based orphanage. They reside just a few houses away at St George but did not know they were adopted from the same facility.
