CHANDIGARH: Former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday congratulated Sunil Jakhar for joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying, he was the “right man in the right party.”
He said, more leaders were likely to desert the sinking ship in the coming days.
In a statement, Amarinder said, the exodus from the Congress will continue and the party is headed for an imminent doom.
“Honest and upright leaders like him (Sunil) cannot breathe in the Congress anymore”, he said, adding, “that space (the Congress party) has grown too stifling and too suffocating.”
The former CM recalled how within the span of less than a year, the Congress party had completely collapsed in Punjab due to one wrong decision.
“I was the chief minister, while Sunil was the PCC president and everything was going on so well and we were headed for repeating the government just less than a year ago”, he said, while adding, “and one wrong decision by the leadership and that proved suicidal for the party that it is now staring at its own doom in Punjab as elsewhere in the country.”
Congress, AAP take pot shots
Reacting to Jakhar's decision to join the BJP, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said: “Not unexpected. Sunil Jakhar may have formally joined the BJP today, he had started working for the party long before, playing blatantly Hindutva politics, damaging the party in every way. There was a reason for him to rake up 'Hindu' card and the reason was revealed today.”

Later, AAP spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang said: “What an epic fall for Sunil Jakhar who joins the same bunch of fanatic bigots he once used to oppose so vociferously. Seeing the beeline most Congressmen are making for BJP, this doesn't really come as a surprise as they share the same core ideology of hate & division… Divided house of Congress is falling like a pack of cards in the wind. No wonder BJP is the second preferred home for all disgruntled Congress leaders because their ideological roots are the same. The exit of Sunil Jakhar marks the end of a Congress already gasping for breath.”
