DK, Udupi dists on high alert due to rain

Mangaluru/ Udupi: Though there was sporadic light to moderate rain in some taluks of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts on Tuesday, the city remained dry, but the weather was cloudy. The administrations of both the districts warned people to be alert, especially those residing near the sea shore, and in low-lying areas, and to not go to beaches.
According to KSNMDC, two locations in DK recorded the highest rain in the state, which are Amtadi and Arala in Bantwal taluk, that received 191.5mm and 148.5mm of rain, respectively, in the last 24 hours, till 8.30am on Tuesday.
With orange alert issued for Wednesday and red alert for Thursday, IMD warned that heavy to very heavy rain was likely at isolated places over all the districts of coastal Karnataka, where rain may exceed 115 mm. It also stated that thunderstorms with lightning were likely to occur at isolated places over all the districts of coastal Karnataka. DK received 36mm of rain, as against normal rain of 4.4mm, and Udupi received 44.7 mm rain, as against normal rain of 3.9mm on Tuesday, which is 720% and 1,046% higher, respectively, than the normal rainfall in the last 24 hours, till 8.30am of Tuesday.
On Monday, rain created havoc at Melkar, Kalladka, Mani on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway, as the ongoing four-lane work caused waterlogging on the road, that caused traffic gridlocks. In Belthangady town, there was waterlogging in the inner roads in Surathkal and Panambur, which caused inconvenience for residents. Even in Udupi, waterlogging wa witnessed in many areas of the district.
