‘Need to preserve less-known ragas’

Dharwad: Professor Harish Hegde of Akkamahadevi Women’s University, Vijayapura, stressed the need to keep alive lesser-known ragas in music lest they will be extinct.
Speaking at a music programme organised by Abhijna Sangeet Academy here on Tuesday, he said music teachers of all gharanas play an important role in this endeavour and preserve the rich heritage of classical music.
Hindustani vocalist Mithun Chakravarthi of Mangaluru rendered lesser-known and difficult ragas like ‘Moulvi’, ‘Basant’, ‘Kedar’, ‘Raysa’ and ‘Kaanada’ with Allamaprabhu Kadkol and Parashuram Kattisangavi accompanying him on tabla and harmonium respectively.
Musicians Shripad Hegde and Allamaprabhu Kadkol were felicitated on the occasion. Retired district judge Shekhargouda Patil, Arati Patil, Shakti Patil and others spoke.
