Farmer robs neighbour to repay loan

Coimbatore: The Aliyar police arrested a 42-year-old farmer on Monday evening for stealing gold ornaments weighing 24 sovereigns from his neighbour’s house at Pongaliyur.
Police identified the accused as K Kathirvel, from Panthakkal Amman Salai at Pongaliyur.
A police officer said Kathirvel robbed the house of Arulmozhi when she, along with other family members, went to a temple at Valparai on Sunday morning. “When she returned at 5.30pm, she found the front door lock was broken open and gold ornaments were missing.”
Arulmozhi immediately lodged a complaint with the Anaimalai police, who registered a case under Sections 380 and 454 of the Indian Penal Code and held an inquiry with the farmhands in the area.
“One of them told us that Kathirvel was seen near the house during the day. When questioned, Kathirvel confessed to the crime. He said he stole the gold as he was unable to repay a loan of a few lakhs,” the officer said.
Subsequently, police arrested him and produced him before a judicial magistrate. He was later remanded in judicial custody.
