Nagpur: Two former water works committee chairmen Vijay Zalke and Sandip Gawai on Tuesday blamed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for the water scarcity. They feel that the MVA government might be pressuring the civic administration to keep the water issue unresolved to prevent BJP from winning a fourth consecutive term in the NMC. “A mass agitation will be launched if the NMC fails to resolve water problems within two weeks,” they warned. “Why did the civic administration remain inactive in the last two months and not try to prevent the water shortage. There is ample water in reservoirs,” they said at a press conference. Gavai said Orange City Water Limited had failed to ensure uninterrupted water supply in most parts. It has even reduced the number of tanks,” he said. Citing how BJP managed water distribution during its regime, Gawai said the two years of lockdown was the best evidence of efficient water supply during summer when usage increases manifold. “NMC always started preparations for summer water management from February itself. But, this year, not a single meeting has been held,” said Gawai. Zalke added that NMC has not completed even 50% of cleaning rivers and nullahs this time. “Even the storm drains have not been cleaned. No corrective measures have been initiated at the 214 water-logging spots and low-lying areas,” added Zalke. Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B on Tuesday held a meeting to review NMC’s monsoon preparedness. He has directed the NMC machinery to complete the cleaning of nullah, river and stormwater network before the monsoon.
