Mangaluru: The rain that lashed the region on Monday, caused the collapse of a part of a dilapidated school in
Kinya, near Ullal, on the intervening night of Tuesday. However, no casualty was reported, since the incident took place at night, said Prashanth
Kumar K S, block education officer,
South.
The incident was reported at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School, Kinya. The school has 101 children enrolled, studying from class I to VIII. Kumar said that since the school building was dilapidated, it had been closed, and was not being utilised for any activities.
On Monday night, out of five classrooms, two collapsed, and the rest were partially damaged. “As a precautionary measure, the entire building is cordoned off, and will be demolished on Wednesday, after an inspection by engineers,” he added.
He added that currently the school has four classrooms, and construction of two more classrooms is in progress. “Since there are not enough classrooms available, three classes have been shifted to a nearby madrassa, and will be shifted back to the school campus, once the construction is over,” said Kumar.
Meanwhile, villagers and SDMC members alleged that they had demanded for the dilapidated building to be demolished completely. However, the officials were not keen on doing so. “Luckily, the building collapsed at night, or else it would have been a disaster, if it took place when children were on campus,” said locals.
