          1. SC balances Shivling and namaz at Gyanvapi… survey officer sacked
          • Shivling and namaz: The Supreme Court directed the Varanasi district administration on Tuesday to secure Shivling, which was reportedly found on the Gyanvapi premises. It also allowed the Muslims to offer namaz in the Gyanvapi mosque. The Supreme Court stayed the parts of the lower court order that might impede the Muslims from offering namaz.
          • Surveyor fired: It was more action-packed in Varanasi, where the court removed advocate commissioner Ajay Mishra, who supervised the survey of the Gyanvapi mosque, from his position over leaking of the contents of the survey report.
          • The leak: On the last day of the survey, reports emerged that the team had found a Shivling in the pond area of the Gyanvapi mosque. The Varanasi court later ordered protection of Shivling by sealing the area.
          • The case: Five women last year approached the Varanasi court seeking permission for daily worship at Shringar Gauri behind one of the walls of the Gyanvapi mosque. As of now, the site opens for the Hindus for one day a year. The complex also houses the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple.
          • What next: Justices DY Chandrachud and PS Narasimha will hear the matter on Thursday after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the UP government, sought more time to answer the bench’s question: “Where exactly was the Shivling found?” Mehta said, “We haven’t seen the report.” More details here
          • And a penalty, the Supreme Court imposed a Rs 8 lakh-fine on two lawyers for ‘misadventure’ after they filed a petition seeking to do away with the ban on 10 and 15 years old fuel oil-powered vehicles.
          2. Delhi HC bells the cat on illegal religious structures
          2. Delhi HC bells the cat on illegal religious structures
Directing the Delhi government to “come down with an iron hand against the encroachers” in order to “send a message, loud and clear, that this will not be tolerated”, the Delhi High Court (HC) asked “How will a civilised society survive like this, if we have things coming up in the middle of the road?”

          The present case
          • The HC’s observations came in response to a petition filed against the encroachment on public roads in the national capital’s Bhajanpura area in the form of two mazars (Islamic religious structures), which, the petition claimed, were obstructing traffic in the area.
          • The petition cited the Supreme Court’s (SC) ruling in 2009 wherein the apex court had said that no unauthorised construction shall be permitted in the name of temple, church, mosque or gurdwara on public streets, public parks or places. The SC had also ruled that in cases where unauthorised construction of a religious structure had already occurred, the state administration was to take appropriate action on a case-by-case basis.
          State of stupor?
          • Noting that it was “at a loss to understand as to how the State can be a mute bystander and allow such illegalities to occur”, the HC reiterated that the “state should play a firm stand and come down with an iron hand to send a clear message to all encroachers that such encroachments will not be tolerated and will be removed as soon as they are sought to be placed and penal action should also be initiated against persons behind raising such structures.”
          Past cases
          • Last year, the HC had directed the Delhi government to remove an illegally constructed temple on a footpath in South Delhi, noting that “the whole city has been taken for a ride for so many years” — in relation to such illegally religious structures coming up on public spaces. The HC had also directed the Delhi Police to place the idols in a nearby temple to preserve their sanctity.

          3. Wholesale inflation at 17-year high
          • Thanks to the Russia-Ukraine war and the rupee’s dip against the US dollar, India’s wholesale inflation touched a 17-year high of 15.08% in April — marking the 13th consecutive month of double digit inflation on the wholesale price index (WPI)
          • The previous high on the WPI in the current series – with a base year of 2011-12 – was recorded at 14.9% in November 2021. In April 2021, the wholesale price inflation rate stood at 10.74%.
          • Fuel and power inflation touched 38.66% in April, up from 34.5% recorded in March. In this segment, LPG inflation was 38.48%, petrol at 60.6% and diesel at 66.1%.
          • Inflation for the manufactured products was at 10.85%, marginally up from 10.7%.
          • Primary articles were the only group to record a decline in inflation in April to 15.45% from 15.54% in March. Food inflation, however, rose slightly from 8.7% to 8.9%.
          • The spike in wholesale inflation has followed a surge in retail inflation that stood at 7.79% in April reaching an eight-year high. This may see the RBI further push for aggressive rate hikes to contain the rising prices. But higher rates may pose more challenges, particularly to the small businesses and generally to the economic growth.

          6. Bribe-for-visa case against Congress MP Karti Chidambaram
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a fresh case against Congress MP Karti Chidambaram for allegedly facilitating visas of Chinese nationals for a power company after receiving illegal gratification of Rs 50 lakh 11 years ago.

          The case
          • The new case is an offshoot of an ongoing probe into alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media during the Congress-led UPA government.
          • The federal agency has alleged that Karti had received Rs 50 lakh bribe to facilitate visas of 263 Chinese nationals in July-August 2011, when his father was the Union home minister.
          • According to CBI, the Talwandi Sabo Power based at Mansa, Punjab, which was running behind schedule, had outsourced the project to a Chinese company.
          • To expedite the work, it tried to procure project visas for Chinese nationals over and above the ceiling imposed by the home ministry, CBI claimed.
          Multi-city search ops
          • CBI teams conducted coordinated search operations at 10 locations in multiple cities in the country, including residences of the Chidambarams in Chennai and Delhi.
          Congress reaction
          • Coming out in defence of its party leader P Chidambaram, the Congress party said the CBI raids were “wrong” and aimed at diverting attention from the key issues of inflation and unemployment.

          • Ultimatum: Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that his $44 billion deal can conclude only if Twitter fails to prove that less than five per cent of the handles are fake. In a Twitter spar, Musk responded to Twitter CEO Parag Agarwal’s explanation about how the microblogging site deals with fake accounts with a poop emoji. The “deal cannot move forward until he does”, Musk tweeted.
          • A bargain? Musk’s Twitter ultimatum came only hours after hinting that he might try to renegotiate the deal. At a technology summit in Miami, Musk said a lower price for the Twitter deal was “not out of the question”.
          • What he wants? Musk is saying that when he offered to buy Twitter for $44 billion, it was based on the understanding that less than five per cent of the handles were fake. However, claims emerged that fake or spam accounts could be as high as 20%. This is when Musk demanded proof for deal worthy spam control in Twitter Inc.
          • Pause explained: On Friday, Musk announced that his Twitter deal was on hold. It took many by surprise. It had its impact on Twitter’s share prices fell by eight per cent on Monday bringing one share’s price about 30% lower than what Musk offered in his deal..
          • What now? More negotiations, possibly. Musk argues, “You can't pay the same price for something that is much worse than they claimed.” Musk, however, will have to pay $1bn as break-up fee if he walks away. Twitter can also sue him to force him to take over the company. More here

          9. Why China’s new hypersonic missile could be a game-changer
          • Chinese researchers from the PLA Rocket Force University of Engineering in Xian are working on a heat-seeking hypersonic weapon that will be able to hit a moving car, according to South China Morning Post.
          • They claim “important progress” had been made towards solving the main problem of how to pinpoint a moving target at extreme speeds.
          • Hypersonic missiles that move at a speed of greater than Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound) are extremely difficult to intercept with any of the existing air defence systems in the world.
          • The research team has been given a deadline of 2025 to complete their work.
          US on radar?
          • The Chinese military has been practising assaults on ‘enemy assets’ with long-range ballistic missiles for some time, US Naval Institute (USNI) reported citing satellite imagery.

          • Hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) could pose a significant threat to warships, including large aircraft carriers, the report said.
          ASBMs
          • It is believed that China has several ASBMs in its arsenal. The land-based ones are -- DF-21D and DF-26. Chinese experts have dubbed the latter the ‘Guam killer’ as it is reportedly capable of hitting the US military base on the Western Pacific island. More details here
