After Covid leave, jail asks 486 to return

Nagpur: Central Prison has sent letters to convicts, their families, guarantors and also local police stations to ensure the inmates return as their Covid leave is long over. Around 190 letters have been despatched.
Sources from the jail said around 486 convicts were released in May 2020 and even after that following the intervention of a high-level court-constituted committee. The decision was undertaken to de-congest jails and prevent the spread of Covid.
Many on trial too were released on interim bail with the intervention of the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA). Many of them were murderers and robbers.
SP Anup Kumre informed around 15 convicts have already returned. “On an average, two to three convicts are returning to jail after receiving the letters. We are sending them letters on a war-footing to ensure their return as soon as possible,” he said.
“We are expecting many more to return. What to do with those ignoring the order will be decided later,” said Kumre.
