MUMBAI: Hitting out at BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis over his claim that he was present at the site of the Babri Masjid demolition, the Shiv Sena on Tuesday said the Centre should set up a committee to probe Fadnavis’s role in the Babri demolition. An editorial in Saamna said that the way a “frustrated” Devendra Fadnavis “was going downhill, there would soon be no opposition party in Maharashtra.” Saamna wrote, “When Babri was demolished in Ayodhya, the BJP called it a ‘black day.’ Later, they started celebrating ‘victory day’... Exactly where Fadnavis was and what his age was when the Babri fell is a matter of research. According to Fadnavis, he was present near the dome and was directly involved in the demolition of Babri, but L K Advani and other prominent BJP leaders do not agree with Fadnavis’s claim. He is not mentioned in any of the police or CBI chargesheets. There is no record of the police calling Fadnavis for even a simple inquiry. On the other hand, Shiv Sena leaders have been mentioned. Therefore, the Central government should appoint a committee to inquire into whether Fadnavis was involved. If it is proven that Fadnavis was in that struggle, he can be felicitated in Nagpur..”
