Corporation workers remove encroachments on the Singarathope Road near Poompuhar handicrafts showroom.
TRICHY: The Trichy Corporation on Wednesday carried out an eviction drive in commercial streets in the city where there are frequent traffic snarls. Space illegally encroached by around 56 shops was retrieved by the civic body in the presence of the city police. The eviction drive was led by by assistant commissioner of Srirangam zone A Akbarali and assistant executive engineer K Balasubramanian. Corporation workers removed encroachments on the Singarathope road near Poompuhar handicrafts showroom. Platforms established by the shops on encroached space and sheds erected by them were removed. The shopkeepers had failed to remove their belongings voluntarily upon receiving eviction notice. The shops had encroached close to 4-6 feet of space, forcing pedestrians to walk over the carriageway. “The eviction drive was taken up based on a suggestion from the city road safety council. Further, other commercial streets near the Chathiram bus stand will be covered under the eviction drive,” Balasubramanian added. Encroachments on Big Bazaar Street and Theradi Bazaar were also removed on Wednesday.
