Mumbai: 60 metres is sufficient distance between Coastal Road pillars, says BMC
Amid opposition to the ongoing Coastal Road works from fisherfolk in Worli, the BMC on Wednesday said that a report received from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) stated that a distance of 60 metres between the pillars, as proposed by the municipal corporation, is sufficient.The BMC said that insurance cover will also be provided for the next 20 years in case of an accident due to collision of any boat with the pillars. The fisherfolk have been demanding 200 metres as the distance between pillars.

31 new Covid-19 cases in Thane, no deaths
With the addition of 31 new Covid-19 cases, the infection count in Maharashtra's Thane district has gone up to 7,09,441, an official said on Thursday.These new cases were reported on Wednesday, he said.With no fresh fatality, the Covid-19 death toll in the district stood at 11,895 and the mortality rate at 1.67 per cent, he added.In neighbouring Palghar district, the Covid-19 infection tally stood at 1,63,612 and the death toll at 3,407, another official said. Maharashtra registered 307 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, the highest addition in a single day in the last 67 days. Daily detections for Mumbai too inched closer to 200 (194) on Wednesday. The state reported one death from Gadchiroli.The last time Maharashtra reported more than 300 cases in a single day was on March 12 (324). Mumbai, Pune and Thane are contributing to more than 90% of cases, said Dr Pradeep Vyas, state’s additional health secretary. “While not many are symptomatic, we are keeping a strict watch considering what is happening in China, North Korea and Taiwan,” he told TOI.
Unusual for Mumbai: Mercury shot past 40°C twice in March
While an intense heat wave has swept across India this summer, Mumbai breached the 40-degree Celsius mark on two occasions, both in March.Data from the 60 automatic weather stations (AWS) that the BMC maintains showed that the mercury touched 40. 8 degrees in Bhandup on March 16, while on March 17 it hit 40. 4 degrees, again in S ward, which is the Bhandup area. This was also the period when a severe heat wave warning was issued by the IMD for Mumbai.However, Met officials said recordings from AWS can be considered as temperatures only for a 1km radius. “These are a bit localised readings and, therefore, one cannot generalise it for the entire city,” an official explained.
Jogeshwari terminus will be connected to local station, metro
The new outstation train terminus to be built in Jogeshwari will come up on the eastern side of the tracks, in between suburban Ram Mandir and Jogeshwari stations.“The station will be accessible from the Western Express Highway, besides it will be well connected by suburban and Metro lines like Line 7 (Andheri to Dahisar via Highway) and Line 6 (Lokhandwala-Vikhroli), which being an east-west corridor has connectivity with eastern suburbs too,” an official said.The platform can accommodate up to 24-coach trains. The terminus will have one stabling line.
Another SBI ATM opened with gas cutters to steal Rs 17 lakh
Unidentified men used gas cutters to break open an ATM in Virar and decamped with over Rs 17 lakh early on Wednesday. This is the second time in three months that a kiosk of the same nationalised bank has been targeted.The SBI ATM located in a residential building, Raja Apartment in Gandhi Chowk, Phoolpada, Virar (east), was found damaged by passers-by in the morning.The police suspect it to be the handiwork of six to seven men as breaking the cash chest required massive effort and experience. The theft is believed to have taken place around 3. 30am.
BJP says CM must resign over SC nod for OBC quota in MP local body polls
With Supreme Court permitting OBC quota in local body polls in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday, BJP targeted the MVA government for not ensuring a similar verdict for Maharashtra. In March, SC had not restored the 27% OBC quota in Maharashtra, citing lack of required empirical data in the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission’s (MSBCC) report presented to court.BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis accused the MVA government of “killing the OBC quota with its negligence” and demanded the resignation of all those responsible. He said, “First the state pointed a finger at Centre, then they did not provide funds to the backwardclass commission. Finally, the data did not match what the court had asked for. ” He pointed out the MP government had submitted data as per the demand of the court and managed to get the quota restored.
