Prevent breeding of mosquitoes, says Mysuru DHO

Mysuru: Mysuru city accounts for 80% of the dengue cases reported in the district, said district health officer Dr KH Prasad.
Speaking after flagging off an awareness rally to mark World Dengue Day at a primary health centre in Krishnamurthypuram near Buddha Vihar here, he said the city has reported 103 of the 139 dengue cases this year. The remaining cases were reported from various taluks.
As most household residents store drinking water in open water tanks, people should cover such tanks to avoid mosquito breeding, one of the major causes for increase in dengue, malaria, chikungunya like fever cases, he said.
“As female mosquitoes breed within seven days of laying eggs after entering such open tanks, residents should clean their tanks once in three days to avoid breeding in water tanks. Likewise, as mosquitoes also breed on ornamental pots, ACs, residents should such things near their houses clean as well as avoid prevent rainwater from stagnating near their houses. This will help prevent mosquitoes breeding,” he added.
Officials in the district health department have taken up door to door awareness drives to sensitize people district since March.
Following the outbreak of tomato fever among children aged below five in neighbouring Kerala, district health authorities have intensified the drive to screen children entering from Kerala at Bavali inter-state check-post in HD Kote taluk.
A batch of health department staff deployed at the check-post have so far screened about 50 children, he said.
