
Mumbai News Live: Former media executive Indrani Mukerjea was granted bail on Wednesday by the Supreme Court in the case involving her daughter Sheena Bora’s murder. Mukerjea is facing trial for allegedly killing her daughter Sheena on April 24, 2012. She was arrested by Khar police on August 25, 2015, and has been lodged at the Byculla Jail since September 2015. Her former husband Peter Mukerjea, ex-CEO of Star India, and Sanjeev Khanna are the co-accused in the case. Peter was granted bail last year.
In other news from the city, heatwave and pre-monsoon showers are likely to hit different parts of the state starting Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places are very likely in south Madhya Maharashtra, south Konkan and some districts of Marathwada. While the next heatwave is likely in the north Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha districts from May 17 to 21, the IMD forecast said.
Meanwhile, four months after it became the first Olive Ridley sea turtle to be satellite-tagged on the coast of Maharashtra, Prathama has returned to near its nesting beach — Velas in the Ratnagiri district —to the surprise of researchers. Prathama, which had left state waters sometime in late March, was spotted 80 km offshore near Velas beach.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to install flood gauges with sensors across the city to measure waterlogging levels during the monsoon. Initially, the civic body will install these flood gauges at around 100 locations. The project is likely to be kicked off this monsoon.
According to officials from the BMC, there is no mechanism at present to understand the level of floods in Mumbai. As per the data available, there are 386 flooding spots in Mumbai; BMC has taken mitigation measures at 280 of these spots. The work on tackling the remaining flooding spots is in progress, officials said.
The instrument would help the BMC plan and tackle flooding more effectively, they added. Read more

On Wednesday Mumbai recorded 194 Covid-19 cases, which is the highest in last three months. According Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) the active case count in Mumbai has crossed 1,000 mark. Like the previous day, city did not record any death due to Covid.
The number of total recovered patients account of 10,41,472. Of 195 Coronavirus cases only six were asymptomatic.
Recovery rate of the city is 98 per cent.
For nearly seven years since her arrest in 2015 for the alleged murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, former media executive Indrani Mukerjea was lodged at the Byculla women’s prison in Mumbai. For most part of her jail stint, Mukerjea remained lodged in a separate cells inside the prison. Within a month of her being lodged at the jail, Mukerjea had fallen unconscious and was rushed to state-run JJ Hospital. Authorities had then probed whether her condition was caused due to overdose of medicines prescribed to her but the same was subsequently ruled out. From today, citizens visiting Dadar market can access a digitised valet parking facility. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, a valet will park the visitor’s car at the nearby civic body-run Kohinoor Parking facility, which can accommodate 1,100 cars.
The initiative is the outcome of a collaboration between the Mumbai civic body, traffic police and a traders’ body in Dadar.
The valet parking services for Dadar market can be availed through a mobile app – Park plus or Park+ app. Visitors can leave their cars at a dedicated booth near Plaza cinema in Dadar. The booth operator will click photos of the vehicle and record the phone number of the car owner. Read more
Estranged cousins and political rivals NCP leader Dhananjay Munde and the BJP's Pankaja Munde took jibes at each other on stage during an event here on Wednesday.
The exchange took place in the presence of NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar at the inauguration of renowned ophthalmologist Dr Tatyarao Lahane's hospital here.
Pawar heaped praises on Lahane during his address and said, "I am sure Dr Lahane will continue to give vision to the needy through the hospital." During her speech, Pankaja, a former minister, said, “The guardian minister of our Beed district and our brother Dhananjay Munde…Very few people have been fortunate enough to see through the lenses of Pawar saheb after having grown up looking through the lenses of Munde-Mahajan.” She was referring to late BJP leaders her father Gopinath Munde and Pramod Mahajan, under whose guidance Dhananjay Munde started his political career before he quit the BJP to join the NCP in 2013. The Preeminent Education and Research Association (PERA), an association of private universities in Maharashtra, will conduct its online Common Entrance Test (CET) 2022 from May 26-28.
Registrations for the entrance exam are currently going on and will end on May 20. Results of the PERA CET will be declared on June 3.
About 15 private universities in Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Kolhapur and Nashik are a part of PERA. The PERA CET is conducted for various undergraduate and post-graduate professional courses like engineering, bioengineering, marine engineering, design, fine art, food technology, pharmacy, management, education, architecture, law etc.
The Mumbai police have arrested the former chief executive officer (CEO) of City Cooperative Bank for allegedly causing a loss of around Rs 96 crore to the bank by sanctioning credit to ineligible people and companies.
Along with the former CEO Ramesh Shirgaonkar (79), the police also arrested a businessman Rajan Sawant (41) who allegedly connived with him. According to the police, Sawant provided fake documents and availed credit worth Rs 11 crore from the bank.
An officer said that they suspect Shirgaonkar to have fraudulently disbursed loans to 56 people without having followed due procedure in allotting these. In the case of Sawant, Shirgaonkar allegedly did not conduct a proper inspection of his outstanding loans before providing the credit facility.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao and comprising Justices B R Gavai and A S Bopanna declined from making comments on the merit of the case.
"The allegation made against the petitioner is that she planned the murder in view of the live in relationship of her daughter with Rahul Mukerjea, who was the son of Peter Mukerjea and his earlier wife," the bench said.
"We are not making comments on the merits of the case. Even if 50 per cent witnesses are given by prosecution, the trial would not be over soon. She will be released on bail subject to satisfaction of the trial court. The same conditions imposed on Peter Mukerjea will also be imposed on her," the bench said.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Indrani Mukerjea, submitted that the trial is not going to complete anytime soon as a large number of witnesses are yet to be examined. She had been denied bail on multiple occasions by a special CBI court, which is conducting the trial in the murder case.
Former media baron Peter Mukerjea was also arrested for allegedly being part of the conspiracy. He was granted bail by the high court in February 2020.

A small causes court in Mumbai recently ordered K Rustom and Company, Mumbai’s well-known ice-cream parlour at Churchgate, to vacate its premises at the North Stand Building, part of the Brabourne Stadium, within two months. The decision resulted from a suit filed in 1996 by the Cricket Club of India (CCI), the owners and the landlords of the premises under dispute.
The ice-cream shop run by the Rustom family, a favourite with many visiting Marine Drive, known for its ice-cream sandwiches, is over eight decades old. The property in dispute comprises 3,070 square feet and a mezzanine floor of 950 square feet. The family has said that they will be filing an appeal against the order.
At the small causes court, CCI had submitted that they were landlords of the said property under the Bombay Rent Act.
Ahead of the monsoons, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Gardens Department has trimmed over 49,000 trees. For this year, the BMC had surveyed 1.5 lakh roadside trees as a pre-monsoon tree trimming exercise and they had found that 1.02 lakh trees needed to be trimmed. Civic body has also issued notices to 8,506 private and government premises for tree trimming.
Data from January 1 to May 11 shows that 49,167 trees were trimmed. The survey had found branches of 1.02 lakh trees are in dangerous condition that could lead to tree fall during heavy rain or wind. The trimming of remaining trees will be completed before monsoon, BMC officials said.
Besides this, the BMC had also found 473 dead and dangerous trees across the city. So far the BMC has removed 444 such trees. The BMC data shows that there are 1.85 lakh roadside trees.

The seven lakes that provide drinking water to Mumbai have 3,21,891 million litres of water or 22.24 per cent of the total capacity of 14,47,363 lakh million litres, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Tata Motors on Tuesday moved the Bombay High Court challenging its disqualification from the tender process for 1,400 electric buses for the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking.
A vacation bench of Justices Nitin Sambre and Anil Pansare directed the transport undertaking to submit its reply to the plea challenging the disqualification. Tata Motors has claimed that the BEST had erroneously labelled its bid as "technically non-responsive", for allegedly deviating from tender specifications.
As per the plea filed by the auto major, the BEST had published an e-tender notice on February 26 this year for two-bid e-tender for the operation of stage carriage services for public transport of 1,400 single-decker AC electric buses for Mumbai and its suburbs. (PTI)
