Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday asserted the regional parties can't battle the BJP as they don't have an ideology. Addressing the shivir, Gandhi said: "It is a fight of ideologies. Regional parties have their space but they cannot defeat the BJP because they do not have that ideology. Only the Congress has a centralised ideology and approach".
His remarks reflect the Congress' tricky situation while dealing with the surging ambitions of many regional parties and their efforts to form a front against the BJP while forcing the Congress to play second fiddle to them. While Gandhi asserted the primacy of the Congress, yet the party's compulsions to seek some alliance against the BJP was stressed in the Udaipur Declaration that kept the doors open for alliances with "like-minded parties"
Gandhi also acknowledged the Congress' disconnect with people. "We (the Congressmen) have to rebuilt our broken connection with the people . It will not happen through short-cuts, but will require hard work," he said wihhout specfying how or who will make it happen .
He once again projected himself as the uncompromising, fearless and clean fighter against the BJP. 'I have never been corrupt, haven't taken any money and I am not scared and will fight (against the BJP) all my life. We are fighting the ideology of hatred and violence."
He said the Modi government was not allowing "conversations" between people and that can have dangerous consequences .
In her speech Sonia Gandhi hoped the shivir will re-energise the Congress. "We will undoubtedly leave re-energised with a refreshed spirit of collective purpose". She ended her speech by chanting 'we will overcome' thrice with the delegates joining her in the chorus.
