Mangaluru: Sandalwood actor
Anirudh, who has been carrying out a campaign for cleanliness with the hashtag #Swacchategaginanusahabhagi (partnering in cleanliness drive) has raised the issue of a garbage heap in the
Sullia town panchayat limits prompting authorities to take measures.
Anirudh, who is also a singer, writer and director, posted the picture of a garbage heap in Sullia town that he received on WhatsApp through a friend on his Facebook page. The post triggered a debate on social media and the president of the town panchayat also reacted. Anirudh also offered to send trucks to clear garbage in Sullia town.
“My friend
Supreeth Montadka had sent a message on Whatsapp with pictures of a garbage heap in Sullia town. Though people have been striving to clear garbage from the town, the heap continues to remain there for several years. Hence, through this video, I request the people of Sullia, officials and people’s representatives to look into the issue and find a solution at the earliest,” Anirudh posted on his Facebook page.
Later, when Sullia town panchayat authorities responded to his Facebook message, Anirudh agreed to send trucks so that the garbage can be removed.
According to residents of Sullia, the town has witnessed garbage clearance problems for six years now. In fact, the town panchayat had constructed a large shed for vehicles right in front of its office. However, the shed was later converted into a dump yard.
Garbage heaps can also be seen behind the town panchayat office. Sullia town panchayat president
Vinayakumar Kandadka said the urban local body has decided to appoint a contractor to remove the garbage.
“We have completed the tender process to remove the garbage and a contract will be signed in a day or two. We have given 20 days to clear garbage dumped inside the shed. We have been facing the garbage issue for many years and requested the district administration to sanction land. Efforts are on to get land for the waste management through the district administration and forest department,” he said.
