Thiruvananthapuram: A pilgrimage by a 21-member gang from Kollam, mostly neighbours, turned out to be a tragedy after a 24-year-old among them was drowned in the sea near Azhimala Siva Temple here on Sunday evening.
Jyothish, son of Sukumaran, of
Jyothish Bhavan, Punalur, in Kollam, was swept into the sea by a huge wave while taking a selfie.
Jyothish was a photographer by profession. According to police, they came here to visit
Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple,
Attukal Devi temple and Azhimala Siva temple in the morning. After visiting all the shrines, they were enjoying the sea at Azhimala.
Jyothish was standing closer to the sea while taking the selfie, suddenly, a huge wave lashed ashore, and he was swept into the sea. On hearing cries of help people in the vicinity rushed to the spot and informed the coastal police.
Coastal police recovered his body around 100 meters away from the accident spot in 30-minutes. The sea in the area is very rough and people were given instructions to stay away from the sea.
His body is kept at the Medical College Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. Police have registered a case under Section 174 of
IPC for unnatural death.
