Colleges asked to apply for NCTE approval to run BEd courses

BHUBANESWAR: The higher education department has asked teacher education institutions and the colleges offering bachelor’s in education (BEd) courses in the state to submit an online application before the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to obtain approval for running BEd courses.
As many as 30 colleges in the state will apply for the approval to offer two-year BEd, four-year BEd and two-year Master of Education (MEd) courses for the academic session 2022-23 and 2023-24. Out of these, 16 stand-alone teacher education colleges will offer 2-year BEd courses from the academic session 2022-23. Some of these colleges will also offer 2-year MEd courses.
Along with the stand-alone colleges, 11 general degree colleges and three model degree colleges will run integrated teacher education programme (ITEP) from the academic session 2023-24. “For this, these colleges need to apply for NCTE approval,” said an official of the higher education department.
The national education policy (NEP) 2020 has mentioned this integrated BEd course under ITEP. Even a gazette notification of the NCTE (recognition, norms and procedure) amendment regulations 2021 has discussed in detail about the ITEP and its implementation.
Recognition of 15 teacher education institutions (TEIs) was withdrawn during the academic session 2020-21 on the ground of having less number of faculties than required. In June last year, the department had requested the NCTE for restoration of recognition withdrawn from 15 TEIs in Odisha.
Following this, the state government had taken steps for filling up 385 teachers in these institutions, official sources said. After two months, the NCTE had restored the recognition order for BEd courses in favour of eight government colleges in Odisha.
Meanwhile, the department has informed to the Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University, Baripada about creation of 12 teaching posts (two professors, four associate professors and six assistant professors) to fulfil the NCTE norms with regard to faculty position for running of BEd, MEd and integrated BEd-MEd courses.
