Citizens of the ton, Lady Whistledown has just confirmed exciting news about the third season of Bridgerton.

The upcoming season of the period drama based on Julia Quinn's books will follow the Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) love story, Coughlan revealed during Sunday's FYSEE panel, Variety reports.

The announcement came as a surprise as the third book zones in on Benedict Bridgerton's love life, which will now likely be pushed to a later date.

The first two seasons followed the first two novels: Season 1 focused on Daphne Bridgerton's (Phoebe Dynevor) love story with Simon (Regé-Page Jean), while season 2 dove into Anthony Bridgerton's (Jonathon Bailey) romance with Kate (Simone Ashley).

Colin and Penelope's story is told in the fourth book.

Confirming the news via Instagram on Monday morning, Coughlan wrote, "Like Lady Whistledown, I've been keeping quite a big secret for quite a long time… but I can finally tell you that Bridgerton Season Three is Colin and Penelope's Story."

Newton also confirmed the news with a post of his own, saying, "Looks like the cats out of the bag!"

In case you missed it, Penelope overheard Colin, who she has been interested in for years, say that he would never marry her in the season two finale. So, it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Another change that will occur during Season 3 is the role of Francesca Bridgerton, previously played by Ruby Sokes. As Sokes landed the lead in Netflix's Lockwood & Co., she exited the Shondaland show and was replaced by Hannah Dodd.
