Coimbatore: The Sulur police booked a truck driver on Saturday for attempting to molest a 37-year-old woman at her residence at
Valarmathi Nagar near
Pappampatti. A team has been formed to nab him.
Police identified the accused as Maveeran, 40, of Muthukalipatti near
Rasipuram in Namakkal district. The woman and her husband run a bakery. Around 3pm on May 11, Maveeran noticed the woman from a tea shop near her house.
“Soon, Maveeran showed up at the woman’s doorstep and requested her to provide him some salt. When she went to kitchen, he followed her and attempted to molest her at knifepoint. The woman managed to overpower him and escaped. When the woman raised an alarm, he fled,” a police officer said.
The woman alerted her husband. Meanwhile, some neighbours came to her help. They found the attacker’s mobile phone, a driving licence and the knife at her house. “They launched a search for him and found a truck parked near a poultry farm on Palladam–Chettipalayam road. They kept a watch over the truck till Friday to catch the driver,” the officer said.
When the driver did not return, the family members approached police on Saturday. Inspector
R Mathaiyan registered a case against the driver under Sections 452, 506 (i) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Police have seized the truck.
