Youth Congress leaders reached Samrala Chowk to protest against
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president J P
Nadda on Saturday. However, before they could move towards rally venue at Chandigarh Road, the police stopped them near Samrala Chowk. The Youth Congress leaders started to argue with the police and when situation went out of control, the police detained the protesters.
The Youth Congress had announced it will gherao Nadda on the issue of inflation a day before his visit. The police closed road from Shingaar Cinema to Chandigarh Road with the help of barricades. At around 3.30pm the
Punjab president of Youth Congress, Barinder Singh Dhillon, district Youth Congress president Yogesh Handa and rural president Lucky Sandhu and others marched towards rally venue while carrying a bike on horse cart.
The police stopped them before they crossed Samrala Chowk. The leaders had become successful in removing the barricades, but the police then strongly acted and detained over 100 Youth Congress leaders from spot.
Meanwhile, massive traffic jam was witnessed at Chandigarh Road and NH 44 from Basti Jodhewal up to Samrala Chowk. The commuters got stuck at the highway, as police had closed Chandigarh Road when Nadda was passing through it. Some commuters were seen driving from the wrong side adding to the problem. A traffic jam was witnessed near Aarti Chowk too, where Nadda was taking meetings with party leaders and industrialists.
