MOHALI: A one-and-a-half-year-old girl died and 45 jhuggis (hutments) were destroyed after a fire broke out in Sundra village, Derabassi, on Saturday afternoon. A three-year-old girl received burn injuries and was admitted to a hospital. The blaze started around 3pm. Migrant labourers were living in the hutments. Eight fire tenders from Derabassi and Panchkula took three hours to douse the flames.
The victim, Rupali, was playing outside her house when she got trapped in the flames. Police said as the jhuggis were built close to each other, the fire spread fast. Initial investigations suggested that short-circuit was the possible reason behind the fire. Fire officer Baljit Singh said they were investigating the matter.
