PANCHKULA: Controversial IPS officer, Inspector General of Police (IG)
Hemant Kalson has been arrested by
Panchkula Police on charges of thrashing a handicapped shopkeeper and ransacking his shop in an inebriated state. Kalson was produced in court on Friday and sent to jail for 14 days, said the police. The government has initiated proceedings to give him voluntary retirement.
A video of Kalson thrashing the shopkeeper with a shoe and throwing goods on the ground went viral. When police was called, Kalson misbehaved with the policemen and used foul language against the
Panchkula DCP. Other policemen present in the police station asked Kalson to remain calm, but to no avail.
Kalson has been arrested on the complaint of
Talwinder Singh, a resident of Rattpur Colony in Pinjore. Talwinder, who is 75% handicapped, works as a caretaker of a water tanker business and provision store owned by late Jeet Singh, who was former sarpanch and president of the municipal committee.
Police said that Talwinder, in his complaint, alleged that Kalson came with a girl. He said that they were both drunk and created a ruckus in the shop besides assaulting him. He said he could not resist his attack due to disability and informed former councillor Satwinder Singh Tony, who informed the police. Police arrived at the spot and took Kalson to the police station.
Talwinder alleged that when he and a few others reached the police station, they saw Kalson sitting on the SHO's chair. When they objected, Kalson was asked to change his seat. Thereafter, police took both Kalson and the girl for medical examination.
Pinjore police have registered two cases against Kalson for trespassing and beating Talwinder Singh and under sections 186, 341, 353 and 506 of the IPC on the complaint of a police constable.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Mukesh Kumar said two cases had been registered against Kalson and he had been arrested.
