Coimbatore: “An impression is created by some people that the Union government is imposing a language on
Tamil Nadu. I think that is far from the truth. That is not correct,”
Tamil Nadu governor R N
Ravi said here on Friday.
Addressing students of Bharathiar University during the convocation ceremony, the governor said that the
New Education Policy encourages learning and teaching subjects in the mother tongue. “Recently, the Prime Minister insisted that courts should function in respective regional languages. He has announced to set up a chair in the name of Subramania Bharati at Banaras Hindu University.”
“There is no question of imposition of
Hindi or any other language. We should encourage all languages. We have a lot to learn from the Tamil language, which has a depth of knowledge,” Ravi said. “Tamil is a very ancient and rich language. Great learned people have created a wealth of knowledge in the language thousands of years back. The knowledge should be made available to the rest of the country. Some of the states are coming up to promote Tamil as the third language. Here, I would like to urge the state government to take initiatives to set up Tamil chairs in universities in other states.”
Tamil Nadu has a very big role to play in building a self-reliant nation, Ravi said. “Young graduates have a major role in nation building. Students should not be afraid of failure. If they face failure, they should keep moving on till they achieve success. If students take a decision, they have to be very firm on it. Even if they fail today, they will succeed tomorrow,” he added.
