Man sentenced to life for father-in-law’s murder

Amravati: A man who killed his father-in-law with a stick was sentenced to life imprisonment by the district and sessions court judge Ravindra M Joshi on Thursday. He was also fined Rs1,000 and an additional rigorous imprisonment of one month in default of fine.
The incident took place on June 7, 2016, at Kasba Kholapur village under Kholapur police station.
The convict, Raju Digambar Umap (53), used to live with his wife and father-in-law Namdev Chandurkar (75). His wife had mental illness.
On the day of incident, Raju had an altercation with Namdev and in a fit of rage he attacked him with a stick, killing him on the spot. Neighbour Rajendra Bakaram Kandalkar lodged a complaint with Kholapur police following which police arrested Raju.
The court examined eight witnesses in the case.
APP Sunil Deshmukh held the brief for the government.
