Moved by rape survivor's plight, Tamil Nadu MP helps family in Indore

INDORE: A DMK MP from Tamil Nadu came all the way to Indore on Thursday to help the family of an 11-year-old rape survivor, who is hospitalized in Indore for reconstructive surgery.
DNV Senthilkumar S on Thursday said he learned about the plight of the child from social media and decided to reach out. He handed over a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to her family.
There's no political reason behind it, the first-time MP from Dharmapuri told reporters in Indore. "I learned that the child's family needed help, so I came," he said.
"I came to know from social media that a child was raped by a neighbour. She is only 11 and doesn't even understand what happened to her. Her parents are daily wage labourers and unable to bear the expenses of her treatment," Senthilkumar said.
"This is why I have come to assure the family of every possible help. If they need any further assistance for the girl's treatment, I am ready to give it or take them to Delhi or Tamil Nadu," he said.
According to police, the child was beaten and raped by a neighbour on March 11. Her family filed a complaint the next day and police filed a case under IPC and Pocso Act. The accused was arrested within hours and is now in jail remand, Maheshwar police station Pankaj Tiwari said.
The sexual assault aggravated a genetic condition the child ails from, said her parents. She has been in a lot of pain since then.
She underwent a corrective surgery when she was six months old, but the rape worsened it, they said. Dr Advait Prakash, who is treating her said, "As per the girl's medical records, she had fistula when she was six months old and was operated. We are not sure if her present condition was caused by the rape." She is stable now but will need multiple surgeries, he said.
