Tirupur: The Nallur police arrested a 23-year-old man on Wednesday for uploading private photos of a woman on
Instagram and using casteist slurs against her.
The accused,
Iman Hameed, a daily wage worker from
Mudalipalayam in Tirupur, was in a relationship with the woman. The 21-year-old woman, a native of Karur, was from a scheduled caste.
In her complaint with police on May 5, the woman said she befriended Hameed via Instagram in April last year. Later, they started living together in Tirupur. “A few months ago, Hameed uploaded private photos of the woman on her two Instagram accounts and used castiest slurs against her. Subsequently, he circulated those photos to woman’s friends and relatives and demanded money from her,” the complaint said.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case against Hameed under sections 354 A, 506 (i) of the Indian Penal Code, Sections 66C, 66E and 67A of the
Information Technology Act, Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act and a few sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The woman also mentioned in her complaint that Hameed had forced her to convert to his religion. However, police said the allegation was not confirmed during the preliminary inquiry.
Hameed was remanded in judicial custody at Tirupur district jail.
