BENGALURU: Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) on Thursday lost a Himalayan Black Bear due to prolonged illness. The 27-year-old was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma — malignant tumour in the intestine — said BBP veterinarians who conducted the postmortem. Mohan, the bear, was rescued from New Grand Circus in Belagavi when he was 7 years old. “The rescued bear was brought to BBP and kept in the zoo. But for the past five years due to an eye-related disorder, he was confined to the enclosure and hardly came out. Though Mohan was put on normal diet, he refused to eat anything for the past 15 days and was put on intravenous (IV) fluids,” said a BBP official. BBP executive director Dr Sunil Panwar said Himalayan Black Bears live for 25 to 30 years under captive conditions. The visceral samples have been sent to the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, Hebbal.
