‘Popularize water saving tech among farmers’

BHUBANESWAR: “All should work to popularize water saving technologies among the farmers,” said Trilochan Mohapatra, director general of Indian council of agricultural research (ICAR), while attending 35th foundation day of ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management (IIWM) Bhubaneswar here on Thursday.

Mohapatra, who is also the secretary of department of agricultural research and education (DARE) under the Union ministry of agriculture and farmer welfare, said scientists should focus on development of water management technologies to suit climate change scenarios.

He said water problems in the country will emerge more seriously in the coming years. He urged upon all stakeholders to develop and design agricultural practices as per the water availability.

SK Chaudhari, deputy director general (Natural Resource Management), stressed upon the need for enhancing water holding capacity of soil. “We have to infuse water wastage reduction and its conservation aspects in the minds of the people,” he added.



Atmaram Mishra, director of IIWM, said the institute has developed many water-saving technologies for the benefit of the farmers during the last 34 years and there is a need to develop more in the coming years.



Distinguished farmers from various districts were felicitated in the function. To mark the day, a day long agri-exhibition was organized in the campus. Cultural programme was organized in the evening.
