GURUGRAM: A man and his son have been arrested for extorting money from a city resident by posing as officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation. Police said the duo threatened the complainant that they would conduct a raid and implicate him in a fake case if he failed to pay them Rs 4 crore.
The main accused has been identified as Yashpal Arora. His wife and son, as well as other accomplices, were also involved in the extortion, police said. The crime came to light after city resident and BJP member Yashpal Batra filed a police complaint last week alleging that and his accomplices were demanding money from him to quash a fake case.
“There was no case filed against the complainant, but the accused claimed ED was investigating their properties and is planning to register a case against him. They said if he pays them the amount, they will talk to the officials and ask them to withdraw the case,” said ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan.
An FIR was then registered at New Colony police station under sections 384 (punishment for extortion), 385 (committing extortion), 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 389 (putting a person in fear of accusation of offence), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
A team was formed to nab the culprits and the complainant was asked to pay Rs 2 lakh to the accused. Arora sent an accomplice to collect cash from Batra on Wednesday evening. When the accomplice handed the money to Arora, police caught him red-handed and arrested his son as well.
During preliminary investigation, police said they found that the father-and-son duo had already spent four years in jail over a CBI case. The accused confessed to the crime and revealed they had already exhorted Rs 10 lakh from victims, police said. “It has also come to our notice that the accused have deceived several people in the past by posing as ED officials. We hope more victims will approach us,” Sangwan said.
