Guwahati: The BJP is aiming to retain the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), while the Congress is gearing up for yet another fight against its arch rival.
The BJP has been on a winning streak in Assam and along with its allies, the saffron alliance has registered seven electoral victories in a row, including two assembly elections, since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. In the recent elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council, Tiwa Autonomous Council and Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council the opposition parties had to bite the dust. The BJP, which is ruling KAAC now, is confident of another easy win.
KAAC chief executive member Tuliram Ronghang said, “Voters have already decided to bless us in all 26 seats in KAAC. We will form the council easily.”
Working president of state PCC, Zakir Hussain Sikdar, said the Congress will reach out to the people again in the KAAC election. “The BJP says the Congress has been routed, but when elections come the Congress becomes their main target. We are the only factor for them in Assam,” he added.
Though opposition AIUDF has no plans to contest in the tribal-inhabited council constituencies, party supremo Badruddin Ajmal said they are ready to join hands with like-minded secular parties to start a new chapter in Assam. “If AAP and Trinamool come forward and approach us for discussions, we are ready. Any secular force can contest polls with our support,” said Ajmal.
Karbi Anglong has been a focused area for the ruling BJP where chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has kick-started a slew of projects in the last one year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ‘Peace, Unity and Development Rally’ at Diphu in Karbi Anglong in April and also laid the foundation stone of the Veterinary College (Diphu), Degree College (West Karbi Anglong) and Agricultural College (Kolonga, West Karbi Anglong).
