NEW DELHI: The arrest of four CBI officers took place after a case was filed on the complaint of a businessman, Abhishek, who runs a firm in Chandigarh. He alleged that six people claiming to be CBI officers entered his office at IT Park, Chandigarh on May 10 and threatened him with unverified allegations.
The accused alleged that the businessman had links with terrorists and CBI apparently had evidence of the firm involved in terror financing. The cops abducted the businessman and took him to an undisclosed location in a car. He was asked to pay Rs 25 lakh for his release and "closing the case".
Sources said employees of his firm protested when the accused took the victim along with them. When the cops forcefully put the victim in their car, the employees informed the local police, who intercepted the CBI sleuths. While probing the abduction complaint, the local cops were shocked to find that the "kidnappers" were CBI sleuths from Delhi.
The local CBI unit in Chandigarh was informed late at night, after which they reached Sector 26 police station in Chandigarh around 11am on May 11 and took the accused in their custody.
"CBI has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption and other related offences, not only in respect of those outside, but also its own officers. As part of this policy, CBI immediately registered a case on the receipt of the complaint and took action. Taking a serious note of this act on part of the delinquent officers, all four of them were dismissed from service. The arrested cops were produced before a court," said CBI spokesperson RC Joshi.
