Krishnagiri: Around 1,000 banana plants were damaged at Uthangarai taluk here on Tuesday night when heavy rain, accompanied by strong whirlwind, lashed the locality. The region has been receiving heavy rain at night for the past couple of days. K Selvam, 41, of Kanampatty, said he lost 300 banana plants that were cultivated on more than an acre of land during the rain and strong wind on Tuesday night. “The plants were ready to be harvested in a month. I have incurred a loss of Rs 1 lakh. Other banana farmers in the area have also lost their crop,” he told TOI. Selvam, along with other farmers, appealed the district administration and the agricultural department to issue them compensation for the damaged banana plants at the earliest.
