Another day, another May peak as demand rockets to 6,780MW
The relentless heat, coupled with humidity, resulted in power demand surging to yet another record level on Thursday. The city’s peak power demand not only clocked the season’s highest of 6,780 megawatt (MW), but also the highest ever for May. The record-breaking power demand comes just a day after peak power demand clocked 6,572 MW in the afternoon, the highest ever in the month of May till then. Officials said just hours later, this record too was broken, when demand clocked 6,596 MW at 11. 18pm on Wednesday. On Thursday, the peak power demand was 6,780 MW at 3.33pm.
The city had recorded a positivity rate of 30.6 percent on January 14, the highest during the pandemic's third wave which was largely due to the highly transmissible Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
The number of daily Covid-19 cases in Delhi had touched the record high of 28,867 on January 13 this year during the third wave of the pandemic.
A total of 28,386 tests were conducted a day earlier, according to the latest health bulletin.
Delhi reported 1,118 fresh coronavirus cases and one death on Tuesday, while the positivity rate was 4.38 percent.
