Police have sent evidence collected from the ground, which is used as a parking lot, to the forensics for examination
MOHALI: Mohali police have identified the spot from where a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) was fired at Punjab Police's intelligence wing headquarters in Mohali's Sector 77 on May 9 evening.
Investigators have found that the attackers had stacked bricks together in a ground which is located right across the road from the headquarters building and used it as a base to fire the RPG. The ground is used as makeshift parking lot.
Police have also collected gunpowder and metal parts from the ground. It is suspected they fell when the RPG was fired from the spot, said sources.
Police on Wednesday also released CCTV footage of a car seen going past the main gate of the building around 7.43pm. Sources in Mohali police said evidence collected from where the RPG was fired has been sent to the forensics for examination and to ascertain whether they were the parts of the recovered launcher, a Soviet RPG-22.
Also, Punjab Police are learnt to have detained a suspect from Tarn Taran district, who is among eight more suspects in connection with the failed RPG attack. Police said Nishan Singh had been arrested in another case of target killings in Tarn Taran, but he was also being questioned in connection with the RPG attack as well.
Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vivek Sheel Soni said, "At present we have not found any evidence of Nishan Singh having any connection with Mohali incident, but he has been arrested in some other case by Punjab Police. We have detained some more suspects for questioning, but so far nothing concrete has come out."
Nishan Singh, a resident of Kulla village in Tarn Taran, he has been picked up from Faridkot.
He is already facing cases of attempt to murder and another under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The special cell of Delhi Police also visited the spot and exchanged information with Mohali police. Senior officers from Chandigarh Police also had a detailed meeting with Mohali SSP.
National Investigation Agency (NIA), National Security Guards (NSG) and Indian Army have already inspected the the building The RPG was fired at the third floor of the highly-guarded building in Mohali's Sector 77 at 7.45 pm on May 9.
