HYDERABAD: A 60-year-old man and his wife were killed by unknown assailants at their home in Peddapalli district on Wednesday. The family members of the victims told police that land disputes with relatives could be the reason behind the double murder.
The deceased were identified as Kotha Sambaiah, 60, and his wife Kotha Laxmi, 55, of the Puttapaka village in the Peddapalli district. According to Manthani police, Sambaiah was a farmer and his wife was a farm labourer.
"On Tuesday night, Laxmi slept inside the house and Sambaiah slept on a cot in front of the house with an air cooler adjacent to the bed. Sambaiah was killed on the cot, while Laxmi's body was found on the floor in the front room," Manthani Circle inspector (CI) Satish said. The assailants hit the victims on their heads with blunt objects. "Both the victims suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot," the CI said.
As nothing was stolen from the house, police ruled out the possibility of the incident being a case of murder for gain. "The valuables in the house were not touched and no attempt was made to look for the valuables by the accused. So we suspect that personal enmity could be the reason behind the murders," the CI said.
In his complaint to the police, the couple's son, K Ravi stated that his family has land disputes with his uncle's family and they might have committed the offense. Police registered a murder case and sent the bodies for postmortem.
