The singing of national anthem at the time of prayer at all madrassas across the state has been made mandatory. (Representational image)With more than 16,000 madrassas in the state reopening after Ramzan holidays, most of them received the Uttar Pradesh Madrassa Education Board’s order on Thursday, stating that singing the national anthem has been mandatory at all madrassas in the state.
In an order dated May 9, 2022, madrassas have been informed that the decision was arrived at by the Board in its meeting on March 24.
The order would be applicable to all madrassas — government-aided, recognised as well as non-aided. Madrassas were closed for their annual Ramzan holidays from March 30 to May 5 when the Board met and took the decision.
The order in this regard was sent by the registrar of the Board to all district minority welfare officers across the state to communicate it to madrassas under their jurisdictions. As per the direction, district minority welfare officers have been informed that every madrassa is required to ensure that just before the start of classes, along with other “dua” (prayers), singing of the “rashtra gaan (national anthem)” in a uniform tone by all teachers and students is “mandatory” from the upcoming academic session.

There are about 16,513 madrassas in Uttar Pradesh, of which 558 are government-aided madrassas. “The decision was taken since it was seen that in every school and college, along with the usual morning prayers, the national anthem is also sung. Thus, it was decided that when we are providing all modern education required in madrassas, we should start this as well,” S N Pandey, Registrar, Uttar Pradesh Madrassa Education Board, told The Indian Express.
He said the executive order has been issued now since the madrassas were closed when the Board met and arrived at the decision.
