PRAYAGRAJ: Our dress says a lot even before any verbal communication. Our culture, traditions and morals are presented to the people through our dress, Allahabad University vice-chancellor Prof Sangita Srivastava opined on Wednesday.
She was delivering the opening remarks at a symposium on “Dress sense and sensibility at work place’, organised jointly by the Centre of Fashion Design and Technology and Textile and Apparel Designing, held at Tilak Bhavan of the Arts campus of AU here on Wednesday.
The event was held especially to address the newly inducted teaching faculty members at AU.
The VC further said, “This is the reason we should take good care of our dress at our workplace. It is necessary for the development of our personality. Indian women have been ahead in carrying on their culture and tradition through their dressing sense.”
Citing the example of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, who was always wore white sarees that reflected her simplicity, spontaneity and creativity, the VC said: “Teachers on the university campus not only present a standard role model in front of the students, but also motivate the students to be vigilant about dress sensibility.”
Speaking on the occasion, the VC said that “a major change came in the dressing patterns of the people of the country in the colonial times when we adopted the western wear of pants and shirts for men while women started wearing a saree and blouse. This was witnessed almost across the country as an accepted dress”.
She added that the dressing sense reflects not just the mindset but also the patterns of behaviour, “because the way you dress also speaks about your personality”. “As teachers in a university we have to dress keeping in mind comfort and functionality instead of following fads in fashion.”
Addressing the newly inducted faculty members, she said that they have to be very careful, thoughtful in their choice of dress and should follow a formal dress code as far as possible since it reflects on the impact they will make on the campus.
Dean science Prof Shekhar Srivatava also addressed the inaugural session. The VC was welcomed by director, Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) Prof Mona Khare and coordinator, Centre of Fashion Design and Technology Monisha Singh.
